Bye.Bye.Bye

ORLANDO, Fla. - Lou Pearlman, the man who created the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in federal prison for engineering a decades-long scam that bilked thousands of investors out of their life savings.

It was the maximum sentence the boy band mogul could receive for allegedly swindling some $300 million from investors and banks since the early 1980s.

He pleaded guilty in March to two counts of conspiracy and single counts of money laundering and presenting a false claim in bankruptcy court.

U.S. District Judge G. Kendall Sharp noted that many victims were Pearlman's relatives, friends and retirees in their 70s or 80s who lost everything.

"The sympathy factor just doesn't run very high with the court," Sharp said.

However, the judge said he would reduce Pearlman's sentence by one month for every $1 million returned to investors. It wasn't clear how, or if, investors would ever be compensated.

"I want to say clearly that there's no pot of gold out there," defense attorney Fletcher Peacock said.

Prosecutors allege Pearlman scammed individuals out of an estimated $200 million, and banks out of another $100 million.

The courtroom was packed with victims, some of whom gave emotional testimony. Another two dozen or so waited outside.

"Over the past nine months since my arrest, I've come to realize the harm that's been done," Pearlman said in a short courtroom statement. "I'm truly sorry and I apologize for what's happened."

Peacock said Pearlman meant to pay back all the investors, and noted he had returned about $103 million.

He said Pearlman got caught up in lawsuits - also alleged fraudulent business practices - over his otherwise successful entertainment ventures in the 1990s that prevented him from returning the money.

P Diddy gets star on Hollywood Walk Of Fame

The moment P.Diddy confessed he hadn't even dared dream of arrived this week when the hip hop mogul became the first male rapper to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And there to witness the happy occasion were all of the singer's nearest and dearest, decked out in white-themed outfits to mark the occasion.

Looking on as the star was unveiled to the tune of Lupe Fiasco hit Superstar, was Diddy's elder son Justin, 14, his former girlfriend Kim Porter and their children, 12-year-old Christian and one-year-old twin girls D'Lila Star and Jessie James. Also present was Kim's son from a previous relationship, 19-year-old Quincy.

The special lady joining the 38-year-old on the podium at Hollywood Boulevard ceremony, however, was his mum Janice, to whom the billionaire artist paid tribute in a moving speech. "You can get a lot of honours, but there's nothing that means as much as the love of your mother. This right here, I hope it makes you proud Mom," he said.

The rapper, whose real name is Sean Coombs, dedicated the star to his late father Melvin, who died in 1972. He also urged fans to follow his example, and never give up striving to achieve their ambitions. "Today is proof that if you believe, all your dreams can come true," the hip-hop mogul told the crowd. "I've gone from Harlem to Hollywood."

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Eloped!?

Just yesterday we reported the rumor that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are engaged, and apparently the couple have already tied the knot?! Latina Magazine reports that Mariah and Nick eloped to an island yesterday, obviously it was "very implusive." Neither of the couple's reps have confirmed the nuptials yet so take this all with a huge grain of salt, but if the rumors are true — congrats to the newlyweds!

Bryant will win first MVP award

It took 12 seasons, but Kobe Bryant has finally been selected the NBA's most valuable player, The Times has learned.

Sources familiar with the outcome who were not authorized to speak publicly about the award until the official announcement from the league said Commissioner David Stern will be in Los Angeles next week to present the trophy to Bryant.

The award, selected by NBA writers and broadcasters, figured to go to either Bryant or New Orleans guard Chris Paul, who guided the Hornets to second place in the Western Conference in the regular season.

Bryant's season capped a massive turnaround from a tumultuous off-season in which he asked to be traded.

The Lakers went from shaky preseason forecasts to winning the top spot in the tough West at 57-25. The Lakers then swept Denver in the first round of the playoffs, with Bryant averaging 33.5 points, although the votes had been cast by then.

Bryant, 29, lost a little in the scoring column during the regular season after winning scoring titles the last two years at 35.4 and 31.6 points a game. He was second to LeBron James at 28.3 a game during the 2007-08 season, but his defense was notably better and he averaged 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists, numbers that were tied for the second- and fourth-best outputs of his career.

He also deferred to teammates much more than in the last few seasons and rarely forced his will on games, a trait that saddled him in the past.

Despite his explosive on-court ability, Bryant never engendered much MVP support until this season. He was third in the voting last season, fourth two seasons ago, and did not receive a vote three years ago when the Lakers failed to make the playoffs.

He was fifth when the Lakers last advanced to the NBA Finals, in 2004.

As the 2007-08 regular season wound down, Bryant spoke about the MVP award.

"MVP nowadays is not an individual award," he said last month. "You really have to make your teammates better and elevate your ballclub. For me to be nominated in that race is a tremendous honor because that's really been one of the criticisms that people have had of me, is how well do I make my teammates better. From that standpoint, I feel like I've already won."

The Lakers usually let the fortunes of their players rest on their own achievements, but the team took the added step of creating a Bryant-for-MVP campaign by sending material to NBA writers around the league.

The concept mimicked an old-style political election campaign and consisted of bumper stickers, campaign buttons, red suspenders and a letter from "campaign manager" Jerry Buss, who urged writers to vote for Bryant.

It might have lent a helping hand, although Bryant's season-long play ultimately had the final say.

Bryant is the fourth Laker to win the MVP award. Shaquille O'Neal won in 2000, Magic Johnson won three times, the last in 1990, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the MVP three times as a Laker, the last time in 1980.
